Meta’s Instagram team has created a new app called Threads for sharing text posts and joining public chats. Users can use their Instagram accounts to log in and create posts that are up to 500 characters with links, photos, and videos up to 5 minutes long. Threads is similar to Twitter, but with some notable differences, such as being decentralized, having no hashtags, no chronological order and only being available on mobile devices. Experts say that Threads could pose a serious challenge to Elon Musk-owned Twitter, because it has access to billions of Instagram users, a familiar interface, and a strong advertising advantage. Threads could also appeal to users unhappy with Twitter’s recent changes, such as introducing subscription fees. Threads could also lead to more open and connected social networks in the future, as Meta is working to make Threads compatible with other platforms.
