WhatsApp, under Meta’s umbrella, has introduced a new voice chat feature reminiscent of Discord, aiming to provide a less intrusive alternative to traditional group calls. This update enables users to initiate voice chats silently, avoiding disruptive ringing for all group members.
Users can effortlessly join by tapping an in-chat bubble, facilitating conversations with those present while still communicating via messages with others. The intuitive call controls at the top of the chat allow swift actions like unmuting, hanging up, or messaging without exiting the voice chat. WhatsApp’s foray into voice chats aligns with similar functionalities on platforms like Discord, Telegram, and Slack, fostering seamless communication within large groups.
WhatsApp also recently announced that it now supports passkeys for Android, in addition to its upgrades to two-account messaging. The company announced it was testing voice chats back in August.
